Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. (American Music Therapy Association definition, 2005.) Who can benefit from music therapy? Music is a universal human experience and touches us in ways that we are just now learning to measure. Music therapy uses this powerful, reinforcing medium to assist people of all ages and all abilities work on non-music goals such as stress reduction, pain management and skill acquisition. Thus, music therapy is an appropriate intervention for children and adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities, neurological differences, acquired disabilities, mental health issues and age related disabilities.
