Security companies serve an array of diverse clientele. The officer must live up to different standards depending on which post he works. It's difficult to implement a clear and consistent expectation scheme when expectations change from site to site. While one client may demand proactive security, another client emphasizes the importance of the "observe and report" mantra. An officer assigned to the former, may overstep his bounds when covering a shift at the second. Once disciplined, he becomes tentative and fails to live up to expectation when back on his original post. In addition to dealing with changing criteria, the officer receives orders from multiple bosses as both pushy clients or their employees and his security supervisors give him conflicting and frequently changing directives. The best security manager understands both the client's requirements and his officers' predispositions. He buffers the client's input, demands, and complaints and channels them into a set of easy-to-understand criteria by which the officer can do his job without fear of misunderstanding or hasty discipline. A wise managers also assigns an officer to a post which best matches the officer's predispositions. The aggressive officer who wants real world pseudo-policing experience is posted to the proactive security site. The low-key retiree who is just looking to earn some supplemental income will do better at the "observe and report" site. The worst security managers are those panicky fellows who overreact to the client's slightest discontent, fail to provide a buffer between the officer and an overbearing client or take out their frustrations with a finicky client by criticizing an officer who had no idea he was doing something wrong in the first place.
