Description

About Odonata Yoga I began practicing yoga in 2010 and was only aware at that time that it was a form of ‘stretching’. Six months into practicing I began noticing changes. I was calmer, more focused and the stresses and anxieties that previously had plagued me seemed to have melted slowly away. That was when I started reading yoga books and realised that there were words to describe what was happening to me and that other people had felt the same. I completed my first teacher training in 2012 and have gone on to further study as I build on my own practice and teaching experience. I wanted to share this remarkable practice and how simple mindfulness through linking the body, breath and mind can benefit each unique individual. Everyone’s experience will be different and the beauty of it is that each individual will take away something different from each class. Yoga is whatever they want it to be. With small class sizes (maximum of 6) I cater for the individual. Pre-booking is essential. Why ‘Odonata yoga’? Odonata is the scientific name for dragonfly. In its larval stage it is already complete and emerges fully formed. Like the dragonfly, we all have everything we need inside of us just waiting to emerge. Yoga will help you to be more ‘you’. I also volunteer for the Cancer Council Queensland offering a free’ Introduction to Yoga’ course several times a year through their c-vivor program. All enquires for this can be made directly to me or register with the Cancer Council Queensland. I offer poses that are held and then linked by vinyasa, or a flow sequence, so that the individual can work to create a body and breath awareness while gaining strength and flexibility. I’m continuing on with my yoga education and journey, hoping always to inspire others in their practice. WHY YOGA? The stress of our modern day life can leave us physically, emotionally and mentally taxed. Yoga has a way of replenishing these stores, strengthening the body, calming the mind and restoring balance. It’s a way to celebrate our health, create self awareness and decrease any negative internal dialogue. Yoga has a positive impact on our inner and outer state of being therefore improving our relationships with those around us. Yoga is not a religion but a way of bringing mindfulness into our lives through physical postures and breath connection leading to greater peace and harmony. BALANCE OF EFFORT AND EASE There needs to be a balance between effort and ease. In our asana practice (physical postures of yoga) we need to find our personal ‘edge’. This is the point where we are being challenged but at the same time not over-extending. This is different for each individual and we need to learn to listen to our bodies so that we gradually open without force or harm. Find the midpoint of effort and ease, gradually exploring your own unique yoga practice. Yoga is meant to fit you, you are not meant to fit the yoga. AWARENESS, FOCUS AND BEING PRESENT Asana practice nourishes us holistically. As stated above, yoga involves effort and ease and also an awareness in connecting the body, breath and mind in the present moment. Pay attention to what you are feeling in your body, to the fluctuations of your mind, the flow of your breath and breathe deeply into any areas that are holding tension. BREATH WORK, CONNECTION AND BEING PRESENT Prana, often referred to as our breath, means life force and yama means to restraint or contain. Pranayama is the expansion of our life force through the regulation of our breath. Slow regulated breath activates the parasympathetic side of the autonomic nervous system creating a relaxation response. So there is a direct connection between the state of the mind and the breath which forms a bridge between our body and our mind. In our asanas we can connect the movement with our breath creating a movement meditation.
