A study group whose purpose is to learn and promote the teachings of the Ohara School of Ikebana (Japanese flower Arranging).

Description

The Ohara School of Ikebana New York Area Chapter meets Sept. through June, usually the second Wednesday of the month at The Japanese-American United Church, 255 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10001 (between 24th and 25th Streets). About every other month we hold a group study with everyone using the same materials to arrange a designated style; several of us are teacher-class level so we critique arrangements and assist one another as we practice. Other times we have a lecture-demonstration Workshop led by Mr. Mutsuo Tomita, (now retired) Director of the Ohara Center of New York (which, sadly, no longer exists). Mr. Tomita then critiques our arrangements. The Group Study fee is $25. for members/$30. for guests. The Workshop is $50. for members/ $55. for guests. (Observation of the lecture-demonstration is available for a fee of $25.; no materials provided.) The fee covers the cost of materials and a donation for use of the space. Annual membership dues are $25. We are essentially a study group consisting of all levels of proficiency. The Ohara School does have a curriculum and we’ve been trying to schedule ‘basic’ arrangements for our group studies to introduce those styles to beginners. The arrangements we do when Mr. Tomita lectures are more advanced but well worth attempting.
