Description

Ms. Lord became acquainted with Burlington's Old North End while rehearsing for and performing in the Spielpalast Cabaret. She discovered a rich and vibrant artistic community that was very gracious and welcoming to her. She wanted to return the kindness. As a lawyer, she saw that the residents of the Old North End would benefit from high quality yet affordable legal services. ONE Legal Clinic aims to fill the gap of legal services that fall between the Public Defender and Vermont Legal Aid. Ms. Lord knows that legal fees for these services average $200 per hour or more, and retainer fees for such services are in the thousands of dollars. She knows that these fees are out of reach of many. To make legal services affordable she knew she had to create an "office" with as little overhead as possible yet simultaneously provide the highest quality legal services. Thanks to "cloud computing" Ms. Lord realized she can "bring her office with her." So she decided to every other Tuesday afternoon away from her private practice in the Northeast Kingdom and serve the residents of the Old North End who have been so gracious to her. Ms. Lord hopes that this service resonates with ONE. Her dream is to see a full time legal clinic providing affordable high quality legal services to residents of the Old North End and beyond. With help from the ONE Ms. Lord is able to meet clients at the conference room at 294 N. Winooski Avenue. The room is spacious, clean, and private. As a a result of "cloud computing," good old Vermont ingenuity, and pooling existing resources, clients can have an initial one hour legal consultation and pay only $25. After that, clients will be charged fees on a "sliding scale" ranging from $25 to $75 per hour based on ability to pay (as determined by the client's conscience). Sometimes a client's legal issued can be addressed in one visit. Usually, one or two more visits are advisable. So clients may expect from one to three office appointments (up to three hours total) to address their particular legal issue. Services include family law, business formation, wills,and real estate. Consultations and document preparation only. No court appearances. Follow-up phone consultations/e-mails are available after the first in person office consultation. Office hours by advance appointment only every other Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Email ONELegalClinic@gmail.com to make an appointment.
