Since 2009 Helen Meria, founder of Options Education, has been helping international students migrate to Australia and commence study. Helen went through the migration process herself, when she embarked on her journey to Australia on a professional adventure that has become her passion and her career. Today she is an entrepreneur, an international advocate and an active member of her community – but most importantly she is still a mother at heart, wanting to provide support and guidance to students who have left their families and their homeland to study overseas. So, why did she choose Australia? Australia is still an uncommon destination for Kenyan and African students – most going to the UK or the USA to for further studies – but Helen recognised the great educational and economical opportunities that Australia offered while she was scouting for universities for her sons and nieces and nephews. Australia is a fantastic place to study and live – it boasts beautiful scenery, a relaxed atmosphere, friendly locals, and so much more – but there are some specific logistical reasons which make it the better choice for international students; these include that it is a more affordable country due to the good exchange rate; it is possible to obtain a Graduate visa upon completion of your studies, allowing you to work in the country post-graduation; and Australia is conducive to good study! After all, it has better weather than the UK and fewer distractions than the USA! For these very reasons, Helen wanted to make Australia an accessible option for international students. It began as a labour of love for her family and friends back home, until one day in 2009 Helen realised she could use her skills and contacts to help people in Africa and over the world. She was passionate about starting a Qualified Education Agency that cared about the individual student, not just the visa processing fee; an agency that was more interested in building long-term relationships with the students and their primary sponsors, through offering continued support and assistance. With this as her inspiration, Helen founded Options Education. Today Options Education has handpicked universities and organisations across Australia to partner with. With a background in finances and a thorough knowledge of both the Australian education framework and the migration system, Helen and her team have the skills and contacts to help international students set up in Australia and excel in their study. Options Education acts as a migration agency for students, with personal support and after-arrival services that make it a unique provider. We pride ourselves on offering handcrafted education solutions for each individual – there is no ‘one size fits all’ model – and we give program counselling for all entry levels: diplomas, undergraduates, masters and postgraduate studies.
