Original Joe’s was opened in 1937 by Croatian Immigrant Tony Rodin, who’s legendary work ethic and love for his restaurant grew Original Joe’s from a 14 stool counter to one of San Francisco’s culinary landmarks. Old fashioned Italian American cooking, with healthy portions at reasonable prices, were prepared behind the counter for all to see. Original Joe’s is the oldest of all existing “Joe’s” restaurants in the country and was an innovator of what is now nationally known as the “Joe’s” concept. Original Joe’s invented exhibition cooking, and with its leather booths and Italian American menu, featuring hamburgers, steaks, and pasta, came to signify a Northern California style of food. Original Joe’s is located at 601 Union Street, in the heart of the historic and majestic North Beach, a mecca for natives, tourists, and culinary aficionados alike. The restaurant offers exhibition cooking, eleven seat counter dining, dining room, outside seating and a full cocktail lounge. Original Joe’s also offers 3 private dining rooms that can accommodate 10 to 80 guests. Original Joe’s remains a privately held; third generation, family owned and operated enterprise based in San Francisco.
