Description

First established in the spring of 1971 to play Varsity against the University of Cambridge, the Oxford University Volleyball Club (OUVC) has since become one of Oxford University’s most successful sports clubs. The club comprises two Men's and two Women's Student Teams playing in the the England Volleyball Association’s (EVA) Student Cup and either the British Universities and Colleges Sports’ (BUCS) Student League or the Berkshire Volleyball Association’s (BVA) Local League. These teams are open to students currently studying for a degree at Oxford University and non-matriculated visiting students. OUVC also has one Men's team and one Women's team competing in EVA’s National Volleyball League (NVL) open to all adults interested in playing at a competitive level – prospective players need not be affiliated to the university. The Men's and Women's Student Teams cater for all levels, absolute beginners and experienced players alike, and seek to both develop new players and promote the sport across the university as a whole and beyond. Virtually all teams have coaches or experienced players running trainings and matches, and, in the past, the club has been Volley-1 (and Sport England Clubmark) accredited. OUVC annually organises the university’s Oxford College Indoor Volleyball League, open to all Colleges and Departments across Oxford University as well as members of Oxford Brookes University, and two outdoor/grass volleyball competitions, namely Cuppers, restricted to Oxford students, and 4MAX, open to all adults. These competitions generally take place in Trinity (i.e. April – June), with 4MAX attracting several teams from all over the country. OUVC also organises the Alumni Match between former and current students of the university, often combined with a black-tie dinner to typically celebrate the end of the volleyball season. The club enjoys a busy Social Calendar, with dinners and events, such as crew-dates and clubbing nights as well as impromptu outings, having common occurrence (join our Facebook Page and G+ Forum, and follow us on Twitter). These provide a moment of respite from the weight and stress of academic work as well as the chance for players from different teams within the club to acquaint themselves with one another and, in the process, forge lasting friendships. OUVC’s tendency to attract a wide range of international students, undergraduates and postgraduates, makes for an unusually multi-cultural and diverse community, offering members a unique opportunity to meet students from other colleges, courses and paths of life. OUVC has strong Outreach track-record, with the club winning the Outreach Club of the Year Award for the year 2007–2008. Members have the opportunity to do outreach work teaching volleyball in local schools in Oxfordshire as part of the University Outreach Programme. OUVC is also generally able to subsidise students wishing to gain refereeing and coaching qualifications via EVA. It provides a wide range of opportunities for students to get involved with the Committee and welcomes new members all year round.

How To Get to Oxford University Volleyball Club

Oxford University Sports Complex is located 30 minutes walk from Oxford's Railway Station and about 25 minutes walk from Gloucester Green Coach Station. Bus n.3 leaves the Railway station approximately every 8 minutes and stops on Iffley Road via New Road (Stop D1). The journey time is 15 minutes.
