The Paleis Hotel in Den Haag is located in a building with a rich history, going back to the 17th Century. Ancient underground escape routes (nowadays closed), still lead to the Old Catholic Monastic Church and to the nearby nunnery! The famous Dutch author Louis Couperus used to stay often in this house which at the time belonged to his brother in law, a well known lawyer and descendant of the patrician family Vlielander Hein. With their large family and numerous servants, they formed the decor of many scenes that took place in this house, (which now is The Paleis Hotel) and that were described so wonderfully in many books of Couperus! All rooms have been renovated in a very exclusive way, harmonizing the history of the building. Breakfast is served with eye for detail on hand painted china in a lovely setting with crispy fresh white linen tablecloths and antique silver teapots.
