The mission of the Peace Corps Films Cooperative is to serve and empower Peace Corps volunteer filmmakers, photographers, writers and media makers. Peace Corps volunteers have served the United Stated and the international community by living and working with diverse cultures around the world. The Peace Corps experience grants volunteers a unique insight into international issues. The commitment of Peace Corps volunteers to be deeply immersed in foreign cultures provides them with enhanced empathy and understanding. Working in under-served communities encourages Peace Corps volunteers to develop great flexibility. These unique skills make Peace Corps volunteer filmmakers very well suited to produce powerful documentary media. One of the obligations of Peace Corps service, as mandated in the Peace Corps Act, is to help Americans better understand the countries in which volunteers serve. This mission (colloquially known as the “Third Goal” of Peace Corps) has not been significantly pursued by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. This is due to the fact there is currently no effective system or organization dedicated to providing meaningful assistance to such projects. The Peace Corps Films Cooperative answers this unmet need by enfranchising Peace Corps Volunteer filmmakers, photographers, writers, and media makers. It provides a platform and an audience for Peace Corps media projects.
