Description

Pelican and Seabird Rescue Inc. (PaSR), the name chosen by our founders to depict the organisations field of expertise, was established in 2003, incorporated in 2006 and was awarded ‘deductible gift recipient’ (DGR) status in 2008. PaSR was the first organisation to be registered by the Qld government for the rescue and rehabilitation of pelicans and seabirds when they were added to the 'specialist protected animals' list. PaSR has created opportunities to network with likeminded organisations such as the International Bird Rescue team in California which boasts over 40 years of experience with pelicans and seabirds. Our members adhere to rules set out by the following: • PaSR Constitution and members Code of Conduct • Queensland Government Rehabilitation Permit and Code of Practice • Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992, Animal Care and Protection Regulation. PaSR is one of only a few organisations world-wide that has the skills and equipment to safely catch injured birds that still have flight ability. Our volunteers are on call 24/7 – including public holidays – to attend rescues. Once a bird is rescued we assess and can sometimes treat injuries in the field. Where a ‘treat and release’ can be achieved the bird is released immediately back to the rescue site. Unfortunately though, in most instances the bird has a more serious injury or illness and we transport it to one of our preferred avian vets or the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital at Wacol for initial assessment and emergency treatment as required. The vet will develop a treatment plan for the bird’s rehabilitation. Once the bird is deemed fit for release it is then returned to the location it was rescued. PaSR is heavily committed to education and research in an effort to protect the flora and fauna that is unique to Australia. We are hoping to achieve many positive outcomes working with Healthy Waterways on their ‘Marine Debris’ project and with the Australian Veterinary Association through their PetPEP program run in conjunction with the Qld schools system. The organisation relies on the generous donations from members of the public and funding from public and private sectors to continue our work within the community. Expenses incurred by PaSR include food for birds in rehab and rescues, medications, rescue and rehabilitation equipment, rescue vehicle maintenance, cleaning products, GoVia toll and mobiles phones. PaSR acknowledges the support of SEQ Healthy Waterways, Access Scaffolding, Gail Austen Goodtime Surfing, Brisbane City Council, Redlands City Council, Logan City Council, Australian Marine Conservation, Qld Wader Study Group, The Port of Brisbane Authority, Brisbane Airport Corporation, SEQ Catchments, SEQ Water and the many members of the public who give so generously to assist with our work. Our daily tasks are made easier by our registered volunteers who give their time freely to help with the day to day running of our organisation. Thank you for being so selfless.
