Exhibition dates: 6 May - 10 July 2016 Whole Gallery, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery The biennial Glencore Percival Portrait Painting Prize has been North Queensland’s own portrait competition since its establishment in 2007. Held at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, the competition showcases the outstanding and innovative work currently being produced by local, national and international artists, while also providing an opportunity for emerging artists to engage with portraiture and share their expressions of themselves and those close to them. This year’s exhibition features 94 works selected as finalists.
Townsville’s own RUN Collective have just put the finishing touches on a fantastic new mural in Ogden Street as part of the city’s continued Street Art Activation. The project was the result of a collaboration between Townsville City Council and Angus Smith Sportspower. The RUN Collective’s work is based on sporting culture in North Queensland, with a major portrait element celebrating the achievements of Cathy Freeman. Freeman has a close relationship with our region and particularly Palm Island, where her mother and grandparents were born, and where the Cathy Freeman Foundation was established in 2007.

The Murray Skate Park Outdoor Free Wall is the city’s first free use, community street art space, and it opens TODAY! In 2015, Townsville City Council endorsed a Street Art Activation Framework. We want to create a space that local street artists can use to practice skills and showcase their work, and the Murray Skate Park Outdoor Free Wall is just the space. Our friends at The Youth Network NQ will be down there this evening giving the wall its first hit out with the delivery of their regular Youth Outreach Program. If you’re a local street artist wanting a space to create work, go check it out!
