General Info

During the fall of 1994, several men gathered one night to discuss the possibility of starting a new fraternity. The topic of discussion involved the single existing fraternity on Wilfrid Laurier’s campus and how it did not suit the desires of the gathered men. Trevor Newell chaired the meeting, and a decision to research the possibilities of founding another fraternity was made. Several phone calls were made, including one to Pi Kappa Alpha’s Director of Expansion Steve Vincent in December of 1994. Vincent followed up with a letter and stayed in contact with Newell over the next couple of months. During this period, several other students across campus were quietly asked if they would be interested in learning more about the possibility of a new fraternity. On March 9, 1995, Vincent made his first visit to WLU. He invited four brothers from Iota Omega Chapter to talk with the twenty men. The presentation was very informative, and the interest group felt that the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity would fit their ideals perfectly. Several days later, Newell called Vincent and informed him the interest group would like to become part of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Only ten days later, expansion consultant Max Holland (Georgia Southern, Iota Upsilon ’93) came to WLU to begin the colonization process. There was not enough time to go through the five-week colonization program because exams began on April 1, so the decision was made to partition the colonization. The first part was to be in the spring, and the second in the fall. By doing so, the colony executive could take the opportunity to attend the Officers Leadership Academy in Memphis in the summer. On April 2, Holland and four brothers of Iota Omega Chapter officially organized the Wilfrid Laurier Colony. Throughout the summer, the colony executives learned from Iota Omega Chapter. They experienced the awesome size and incredible strength of the brotherhood while at the Officers Leadership Academy at the International Headquarters in Memphis. Two weeks into the school term, during the third week of September, Holland returned to WLU to assist in the colony’s first rush week. With the help of Holland and Derek Grech (president of Iota Omega Chapter), the first rush week was extremely successful. At the end of Holland’s third week with the colony, Chapter Consultant Jefrey Meletio (Winthrop, Theta Sigma ’91) came to WLU and assisted in the final stages of colonization. The Wilfrid Laurier group established its goals and objectives for the upcoming year and set out to accomplish them. Finally Kappa Mu was Chartered on March 23 1996 and became an independent chapter.
