Pierce Freelon ran for Mayor of Durham, North Carolina where he was born and raised. He is a musician, professor, artivist, husband and father.
Pierce Freelon was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina where his parents and grandmother fed him a steady diet of Star Trek: the Next Generation, the Museum of Life and Science and Afrocentricity. After graduating with degrees in African and African American Studies from UNC Chapel Hill (BA) and Syracuse University (MA), he started searching for ways to answer his calling to art and activism. Pierce found early success co-founding the Emmy-award winning PBS web-series, Beat Making Lab™. His curriculums and grant-writing also led to the development of Next Level - a $1,000,000 collaboration between UNC Chapel Hill and the US Department of State. In 2014, after several years teaching beat making and songwriting across Africa and its diaspora, Pierce's ancestors communicated a clear message: go home. Inspired by his Grandmother's mantra "bloom where you are planted", he returned to North Carolina and created a digital makerspace and community center in collaboration with American Underground called Blackspace. Blackspace has partnered with Apple, SAS, Art of Cool, Moogfest, Black Wall Street, NC State's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Digital Portobelo, Runaway, and Beat Making Lab to provide STEAM (science, tech, engineering, arts and math) programming to youth in Durham, free of charge. Pierce has also lectured in the departments of Political Science, African American Studies and Music at North Carolina Central University and UNC Chapel Hill.
