CURIOUS?
What is the purpose of "chemical free" products?
~Many commercial products contain multiple chemicals and sulfates that can irritate your skin, mucus membranes, & children’s' skin. Also, sulfates really dry out skin and throw off your own natural ability to regulate your skin's oil production. If skin is very dry it will over produce oil and therefore give you problem skin. Many people are sensitive to harsh chemicals found in cleaners and bath & beauty products. We strive to provide you with products that are not only luxurious but, also, chemical free.
Why do we use so many different oils & butters?
~Each ingredient boasts it's own unique properties; some oils are used to make soaps harder or lather more, butters will be very conditioning and moisturizing and, some oils like Jojoba and Olive oil are so close to your skin's own oil and sebum that they are incredibly good at balancing skin issues.
What is Sodium Hydroxide & what is it doing in my soap?
~ Well, Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH or Lye) is the very heart of soap! You cannot have soap with out lye. Lye is very caustic and, when combined with oils, creates soaponification; that is the conversion of oil into a soap. The is no Lye left in your soap once the curing process has completed. Alone, Lye has a Ph of 13.5 but, after soaponification the Ph of the soap is between 7 and 10. The lower the Ph the gentler it is to your skin!
How do I use and store my {pirk} soaps?
~ Pirk soaps are used like regular soaps! rub directly on your body to utilize the exfoliating bars or use wash cloth. because {pirk} soaps have such high glycerin content they do not dry as quickly as commercial soaps. Place your used soap on a good soap dish and do not leave it in the shower. Use your Soap within 3-4 months of purchase for best results.
What are essential oils and how do the benefit me?
~Essential oils are the oil of a plant that has been extracted using distillation. The scents and medicinal properties of the plants are concentrated into a thin oil. All medicine started with the use of plants by means of teas, extracts and, tinctures. Many overlook the medicinal properties of plants but we have added them for a couple reasons: they smell amazing, they are all natural, and they are purported to have healing benefits. Now, I’m not going to make any claims that you will be cured of any illnesses but...you might feel a little better, right?
Who is this, "we,” and why do they make soap?
~Great Question! {pirk} consists of owner and operator Priscilla Priebe, her loving and supportive husband David Priebe, 2 cats, a hedgehog (Head of the Exfoliation Development Dept), a chinchilla, and a lot of coffee...oh and some super helpers that come and go.
{pirk} was started out as a need for Priscilla to go chemical free. In early 2010 Priscilla was diagnosed with an Autoimmune disease. Gluten free diets, physical therapy, and drugs were tried but yielded very few results. In an effort to feel better a business was born. She started living organically as much as possible and making chemical free products. What better way to start feeling better than to remove poisons from your surroundings. David's mother is also a sufferer of MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) and was another inspiration for the beginning of {pirk}.
