Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company was founded in 2003 by Mark Clayton Southers to provide playwrights who have lived or studied in Pittsburgh with an opportunity to have their plays produced. Since its inception, Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company has produced over 20 main stage plays and countless staged readings. Each season includes an August Wilson play, presented in the same order the plays were produced on Broadway. Southers also created the Theatre Festival in Black & White to encourage collaboration among black and white playwrights, actors, directors and production staff. This critically acclaimed festival matches black directors with white playwrights and white directors with black playwrights, successfully integrating not only theatre artists but audiences as well.
