The role of the Police & Crime Commisisoner for Cleveland - Represents the interests of local communities - Holds the Chief Constable to account for police performance - Sets the priorities for the Force and prepares the Police and Crime Plan - Appoints (and dismisses if necessary) the Chief Constable. - Sets the Police budget and the part of council tax that goes to policing - Works with other agencies and partners to improve public safety - Commissions police and crime services.

Barry Coppinger brings to the role a long track record of public service, including wide experience of policing and public protection services. He has served as a local councillor for well over 25 years and has held numerous posts including Executive Member for Public Protection, Chair of a Crime and Disorder Partnership and the Cleveland Joint Emergency Planning Committee, as well as serving as a member of the former Cleveland Police Authority. He played a central role in introducing Neighbourhood Policing in Cleveland, and has experience of developing a wide range of public protection and anti-crime projects, including the roll-out of ‘Alley Gates’ and the introduction of ‘talking’ CCTV cameras.Company Rating
