As a certified birth doula, I'm professionally trained in how to assist women and families through the remarkable journey of labor and birth by offering continuity of care throughout pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum. I provide emotional and psychological support, evidenced based information, advocacy in the hospital setting, and labor techniques proven to reduce pain, fears, and medical interventions. As a doula, I am attentive to your hopes and fears, respectful of your choices, and inspire confidence in your ability to labor and birth. My prior training as a midwife and my current work as a counselor supply my doula practice with a special level of care, knowledge, and expertise, which I hope to share with you and your family during the childbearing year. As a doula, I do not perform any medical procedures, but I do work collaboratively with the hospital staff to create a supportive team atmosphere during your labor and birth. I know how to maintain good rapport with nurses, midwives, and doctors while simultaneously advocating for your needs and choices. Doulas do not replace the important role of the father, partner, or other family members. Instead, I encourage partners to engage in the process with greater confidence and effectiveness, which relieves them of the pressure to know and do everything. My knowledge, skills, and expertise allows partners to be less pressured and more present. They can be reassured that the doula will offer practical suggestions, information, and techniques as needed, which allows partners to be much more relaxed, loving, and emotionally present. A doula is also flexible and knows how to navigate birth’s unexpected twists and turns. If unforeseen circumstances should arise, I remain calm, keep you informed on what is happening, and help you adapt to changing circumstances.
