The MAPS program focuses on bringing PSU students into third grade classrooms at Alder Elementary to help teachers and students alike.
In the 2011-2012 academic year, Portland State University adopted a grade level (Dreamer Class) at Alder Elementary School through I Have A Dream Foundation (IHADF) Oregon. This means PSU made a pledge to support the IHADF’s goal to help low-income students in a particular grade level achieve success in school, college and career. Alder Elementary is a school in East County in Reynolds School District rich with diversity and resilience, in which 27 different languages are spoken by students and their families In 2010, Alder Elementary student demographics were 65% Hispanic, 22% White, 7% Asian and 7% Black representing ancestry from many countries. The elementary school serves 580 students and 94% of those students qualify for free or reduced lunch benefits, 12.8% are homeless and more than 74% enter Kindergarten with little or no English language skills. Due to these potential barriers to education, Alder Elementary was chosen to be the first Dreamer School in the nation through IHADF Oregon Affiliate. The program at Alder is essentially a pilot project location for their new program model. This means that instead of simply adopting one Dreamer Class a commitment has been made to adopt every class at Alder. The Dreamer School’s long term goal is also to help low-income children achieve academic success in school, college and career on a larger scale than Dreamer Classes.
