DISCLAIMER: The BJJ class associated with the PE Department will NOT be operating this term. This will change some things about the club as well. Check out our updated FAQs. As of now we are not sure when the class will be reinstated but we will update this page and the class page as we find out. Welcome to the PSU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club Facebook Page! We meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:30-4:30 in ASRC 450. PSU BJJ FAQs: Q: What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)? A: BJJ is a grappling art/sport that's like a combination of Judo and wrestling. Check out this cool video documentary on BJJ put together by a PSU film student, Izzy Berlin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9etTm7Umzfs Q: The video above features Five Rings Jiu Jitsu. Are you associated with Five Rings? A: We're affiliated with the BJJ program in the PE department at PSU. However, the coaches that run that program also run Five Rings. We have many club members who train at other academies and everyone at PSU is welcome. This means you! Q: I've never done BJJ, can I still join your club? A: Yes! The club is for all skill levels. Q: How much does it cost? A: The first practice is free, after which club dues are the same as the quarterly cost of auditing the PE class, except for the following discount: If you pay for multiple quarters at once, you get 20% off. For example, it is $65 for a single term, $104 for two terms, or $156 for the whole academic year. Q: What else do I need to participate? A: Before you can train with us, we'll need you to fill out the Code of Conduct/Liability Waiver which can be found here: https://orgsync.com/18575/forms/154528 Also, we train in a gi about 80% of the time, so you'll need a gi. If you don't own a gi and can't borrow one from a friend or family member, they can be purchased from many online or local retailers. Gis may be purchased from Portland Fight Gear for very reasonable prices. This shop is located at Five Rings Jiu Jitsu. Q: What is a 'gi'? A: A 'gi' is a traditional uniform worn in many Japanese martial arts. The gis worn in BJJ are usually thicker than those worn in karate or other traditional martial arts and are made to be pulled on without tearing easily. Judo gis are typically thicker than BJJ gis, but they'll work just as well. Any other questions? Just ask! In person, via Facebook or email (portlandstate.bjj@gmail.com) - it's up to you.
