While I enjoy working from sittings, for practical reasons I work mainly from photographs as the level of detail and technique I use means I spend several weeks on every portrait, making it impractical to expect that time commitment from the sitter. I have long trajectory in portraiture for a painter of my age. I aim for spatial and emotional depth in my portraits, as well as an aesthetically successful composition. The first step in a portrait commission is a good discussion with the sitter or client to establish any preferences or ideas they may have. I am happy for people to input their compositional ideas and equally happy for them to leave that entirely to me. My photographer and I will then spend at least half a day with the sitter taking many photographs and drawing references. I like doing this in the sitter’s home as it offers a further insight into their character and allows for the inclusion of personal objects in the composition. From this initial material I will work out a composition for the portrait and prepare a drawing for the client’s approval. Once the composition is agreed I paint the portrait in my studio. It takes a several weeks to complete a painting.
