This is a very concise description of what a community acupuncture clinic is (taken from the ACMAC website): “The Association of Community and Multibed Acupuncture Clinics (ACMAC) represents a growing group of acupuncture clinics and practitioners who seek to make acupuncture accessible to as many people as possible. Affordability is a defining aspect of accessibility: in community/multibed clinics, several patients are treated together in one space. This reduces overhead costs and these savings can then be passed to the patients. Equally important as the reduced cost of treatment, however, is the powerfully nurturing atmosphere produced when many people are treated together. Please note that the names “multibed” and “community” clinics are interchangeable and do not represent different types of clinic.” What we do: Provide acupuncture in a multibed setting. I will ask you to fill in a patient questionnaire the first time you come for a treatment. I may ask a few questions about your condition and look at your tongue and feel your pulse to decide how to treat you. What we need from you: Please be aware that I do not provide primary health care! Please speak to your GP if you have any serious or on-going concerns about your health. Acupuncture is a wonderful complementary treatment for Western medicine, but not a substitute. Please take responsibility for your own health. Make yourself comfortable and relax. The atmosphere in the clinic is a relaxed and healing one, please keep your voice low and enjoy the calm. Wear whatever you are comfortable in – loose clothing is great; it can easily be rolled up as most of the acupuncture points used will be from your knees down and from your elbows down. Shirts with buttons allow easy access to points on your upper chest and shoulders as do strappy tops. Patience may be required when the clinic is busy. Please arrive on time or you may have to wait a bit as the appointments are close together. You can book yourself in for your next appointment in the diary by writing your name down in the time slot that suits you. If you have to cancel or rearrange an appointment please let me know as soon as you know you are unable to attend but at least 24hrs beforehand. Payments can only be made by cash or cheque, please bring the correct change for your treatment if possible. Acupuncture is a process and has an accumulative effect. Please have patience and try to commit yourself to a course of treatments (the length of which will be discussed with you on your first visit). How much does it cost? Patients pay what they can genuinely afford each session between £10-£50. It is absolutely fine to pay more one session than the next. Patients do not have to show proof of income. Portsmouth Community Acupuncture Clinic is funded solely by the patients coming and paying for their treatments. What can I do to help sustain the clinic? Come and have acupuncture!
