Wines with altitude that perfectly capture the essence of Preston Peak.
Preston Peak Wines' Toowoomba Cellar Door offers wine tastings and sales along with cheese platters at the stunning location just 10 minutes south of Toowoomba. The extensive range of wines are grown and produced on Queensland's Granite Belt. The vision of owner and self-confessed oenophile Ashley Smith was to produce an exceptional range of cool-climate wines from the vines, some of which are over 50 years old. At an altitude of 860 metres, and originally planted with mostly Chardonnay, the vineyard now boasts over a dozen varietals – both reds and whites – and continues to surprise and delight. Preston Peak Wines have been winning awards since 1997, when the first barrel ferment Chardonnay won a gold medal at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show. Since then the awards have numbered over 300, one highlight being the stunning 2008 Reserve Shiraz, judged to be in the Top Five Shiraz of Australia and New Zealand in the prestigious Winestate Wine of the Year awards. High praise indeed to be judged better than Penfolds Grange Hermitage and Henschke Hill of Grace. Granite Belt vineyards specialise in alternative varieties and Preston Peak is no different with Petit Verdot, Mataro and Sagrantino just a few of the wines drawing attention both Australia-wide and internationally.
