Advancing the conservation of seagrass through education, influence, research and action | Educate, Restore & Conserve
Seagrasses are a unique group of flowering plants that live fully immersed in sea water. They favour shallow coastal areas and are found on sandy and muddy sea beds. They can form vast beds and are visible at low tide with some being permanently submerged. They need a lot of sunlight for growth and are highly susceptible to pollution. They are highly evolved and can complete their lifecycle underwater - they even have waterproof pollen! Seagrass meadows have long been recognised as an important habitat for marine wildlife. Underwater, the dense cover of leaves acts as a nursery area for commercially important juvenile fish and crustaceans, and provides shelter from strong currents and predators. Seahorses favour these areas and anchor to the plants using their tails. As well as providing havens for certain species, seagrass is food for birds, especially when it is exposed at low tide. Its dense network of roots and rhizomes acts to bind the sediment together making the sand or mud more stable and slowing down coastal erosion. Seagrass is also capable of storing carbon, like land plants, and can hold the same amount of carbon per hectare of meadow as the world's forests. This is a great natural sink for carbon dioxide, one of the major greenhouse gases. Given their importance, you would think that seagrass beds are in a good state, unfortunately this is not the case. Many are under direct threat from harmful fishing practices, coastal development and pollution. Many people see them as seaweeds or pests to the coastal environments they inhabit due to their dense beds. We need YOUR help to spread the word, educate, restore and conserve these fragile, yet vital habitats and give them the public voice they deserve!
