Description

Protect Portland Children is a group of concerned citizens who are organizing opposition to the Good News Club and working to minimize its negative impact on our children. The Good News Club is targeting Portland for an aggressive recruiting campaign this summer and fall. They’ve targeted other cities in previous years—Boston, Twin Cities, Denver, and others. This year, Portland is fighting back. We believe that no religious groups should be able to use our public schools to recruit and indoctrinate young children. However, the Good News Club is legal (U.S. Supreme Court, Good News Club v. Milford Central School, 2001), so we can’t ban them from our public schools. But because they are legal doesn’t mean they are moral, and it doesn’t mean that there is nothing we can do to stop them. Make Sure Parents Are Informed Let’s build awareness about what the Good News Club teaches children. They misrepresent themselves as harmless bible study when they are really hardcore fundamentalist indoctrination. We think that if parents knew about the toxic nature of the Good News Club’s curriculum, they wouldn’t allow their kids to sign up. - Most parents don’t want their children to be taught that they are born wicked and deserve to be punished for eternity. They want them to be taught that they are good at heart. They want to build self esteem, not tear it down. - Most parents don’t want their children to be terrorized by vivid descriptions of hell and apocalypse. They want their children to feel secure in the world. - Most parents don’t want their children to be taught submission to authority (especially their little girls). They want their kids to learn critical thinking and how to stand up for themselves. - Most parents don’t want their children to be taught that their friends are going to hell and that they shouldn’t associate with them. Parents should know that the traumas inflicted on their children by these doctrines can last into adulthood. Talk to School Administrators The Good News Club tries to blur the line between the school and the club and usurp the school’s authority. We need to make sure they play by the rules. - School administrators and teachers are not allowed to promote the Good News Club in any way. - School administrators must make the difference between the club and the school clear to everyone, especially young students. - School administrators should be on the lookout for religious bullying, harassment or aggressive recruiting. What You Can Do - Join our email list so we can send you news updates and action alerts. You can do this by clicking on the Subscribe to Newsletter tab on this Facebook page. - Talk to your friends. Help raise awareness about the Good News Club’s aggressive recruiting trip to Portland this summer. We want to shine a light on their activities. - Open up conversations in your community about the religious recruiting of children in public schools. - Like and Share our posts wherever you can. - Do you have children in public schools or know someone who does? Let us know if you do. We’re building a network of concerned parents who can talk to school administrators and other parents about the Good News Club. We’ll provide tools and training. - If you are motivated in this way and it fits your budget, we always appreciate a donation to help us cover expenses (all labor is volunteer). The first $50 of your donation qualifies for the Oregon Political Tax Credit, meaning if you live in Oregon you can donate $50 for free, or you can donate $100 for $50.
