As the National Education Centre for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium is the Worlds Largest Living Coral Reef Aquarium. Reef HQ Aquarium (initially known as the Great Barrier Reef Wonderland) was the brainchild of Dr. Graeme Kelleher, a former Chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, who wanted to create an example of the Great Barrier Reef on land. Making the Reef accessible to people of all ages and physical abilities at a low cost and thereby gain community support for the protection of “the real thing”. Reef HQ Aquarium was built as a Bicentennial Commemorative project and opened in Townsville on 24th June 1987. Through the provision of educational and informational services relating to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Reef HQ Aquarium ensures the community and stakeholders have a clear understanding of the value of the Great Barrier Reef, the threats to its sustainable future and their role in protecting it. Reef HQ Aquarium achieves this through providing world class living exhibits complemented by thematic and interactive educational experiences, which raise awareness and encourage behaviour change within the community that will help protect the Great Barrier Reef.

One of the richest, most complex and diverse ecosystems in the world, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park begins at the tip of Cape York in Queensland and extends south to Bundaberg. The area is larger than Victoria and Tasmania combined and stretches more than 2300km along the north-east coast of Australia. Located on Flinders Street East, Reef HQ Aquarium is an easy walk from Townsville's CBD, The Strand and Magnetic Island ferry terminal.
