We are a non-profit, non-sectarian, charitable organization supporting refugees, immigrants, and other Canadians in Newfoundland and Labrador since 1983 Our services are available to those experiencing cultural, linguistic, or other barriers regardless of nationality, religion or cultural background. Our Primary objective is to help refugees and immigrants become productive members of our society. To pursue our mission the Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council (RIAC) will work: • To provide support and opportunities for learning in English for members and newcomers as well as conversation partnerships with volunteers, as requested. • To seek, cultivate, and build upon inter-organizational partnerships to create projects and programs to: • facilitate and enrich integration of the newcomer community into Canadian life and the local community; and ensure that the rights and responsibilities of members are known, protected, and maintained. • To establish and maintain a resource centre to: • provide information and assistance connecting members and the newcomer community with community services and opportunities; and • work with members to enrich the voices of the newcomer community through the development of cultural and media-based projects. • To disseminate information about refugees, immigrants, and diversity to the public through media such as: o a newsletter; o public speaking; o public events; and o presentations on original research. VISION STATEMENT To create a community that is inclusive and free of prejudice; that celebrates the diversity of its population; and that supports the rights of all people to enjoy freedom from persecution, danger and oppression. MISSION STATEMENT To enable and empower people of diverse origins in making Newfoundland and Labrador their home; and to enrich the province by facilitating cultural sharing across communities, sectors and institutions.
