Description

The Regional Studies Association (RSA) is an international learned society concerned with the analysis of regions and regional issues. Based in the UK and with a Foundation in Belgium, the RSA has global reach, with members in more than seventy countries supported by an extensive structure of international Sections and Divisions. These networks work with the RSA to ensure that all RSA members are supported and kept informed of events, grant funding and opportunities to speak and to publish. The territorial networks may work in languages other than English. The RSA seeks to bridge analysis by researchers with the needs of policy makers and practitioners working in public or private sectors. Members are located in major cities, towns, peri-urban and rural areas and they are employed in diverse settings including universities and other research organisations, local, regional and city governments, private and non-profit organisations. The RSA’s membership includes: • Academics from economics, geography, political science, planning, sociology and related disciplines such as data science and transport engineering • Researchers in a variety of research based organisation including think tanks, consultancies and private research institutions • Development agencies at different scales • Meta-organisations such as the EU, Committee of the Regions, United Nations, OECD etc • PhD students who are supported by the Student and Early Career Network The RSA promotes the highest standards of theoretical development, empirical analysis and debate of policy issues at a regional level. It is interested in: • the urban and the rural • atypical concepts of space, such as city regions and interstitial spaces • issues of economic development and growth • conceptions of territory and its governance • climate change and sustainable development • equity and injustice The RSA offers a range of events, funding, speaking and publishing opportunities to support the development of regional studies professionals and students and their work. This includes the provision of professional development opportunities, the analysis and dissemination of information, and measures to improve policy maker and practitioner access to regional studies research. These opportunities include: • An influential book series (Regions and Cities) and five journals leading the multi- and inter-disciplinary debate on regional development and policy-making (Regional Studies); spatial economics (Spatial Economic Analysis); interfaces between territory, politics, economy and identity (Territory, Politics, Governance); and the transformation of the global South/Greater BRICS (Area Development and Policy). • An open-access journal examining trans-disciplinary regional issues in economics, geography, planning, political science, and related fields (Regional Studies, Regional Science). • The tri-annual, open access eZine, Regions which is the voice of the RSA members. • Special interest groups known as research networks which are funded by the RSA and which reflect communities of practice in our field • A range of funding opportunities to suit different career stages, supporting member research, dissemination and networking (including RSA Policy Expo, Membership Research Grant (MeRSA), Fellowship Research Grant (FeRSA), Early Career Research Grant and Research Network Grant • Travel grants to assist those wishing to attend non-RSA events, supporting members to present and disseminate their work to diverse and international audiences. • Awards for excellence in the field with the Sir Peter Hall Contribution to the Field Award, Best Book Award, Nathaniel Lichfield Award, RSA and Routledge Early Career Award, Best Paper and Best Referee Awards for all its academic journals and including recognition awards for the best institutional ambassador and best media communications award. • Opportunities to network with and learn from research leaders, industry experts, and policy makers at an increasingly large programme of international conferences and events. In 2017, the RSA organised events in Ireland, Brazil, China, Romania, Belgium, Australia, UK & Russia. Events were hosted in other territories through the Research Networks. Our membership fees are based on five different categories and on the country in which you reside. The broad aims of the Association are: 1. Developing the field of regional studies for the benefit of the wider community through effective networking at different levels; 2. Maximising membership and community building through continued engagement and the delivery of new services; 3. Knowledge production; generating new knowledge through funding and supporting Research Networks and Spatial Groups; 4. Dissemination through the publication of journals and books, and by organising conferences, seminars, workshops and other events; 5. Influencing policy debate and practice, for example by responding to consultations and liaising with appropriate bodies.
