APRIL NEWS LETTER IMPORTANCE OF “VALUE ADDED SALES” (VAS) What does “Value Added” mean? It means creating an additional value for your products or services. For example, if you are a manufacturer, “Value Added” means turning raw materials into a finished product that is useful. McDonald’s & WAWA are two companies that continually keep improving on their products and services. McDonald’s was not the first chain to sell hamburgers, but they reinvented the way that hamburgers are marketed. Currently, WAWA has grown to be the major player in takeout food and unbranded gas in this region. Using many VAS techniques, this turned them into the regional leader in their industry. How does this relate to your business? Depending on whether your establishment is a restaurant, a bar, or both will have a bearing on how you go about increasing your profits through “Value Added Sales.” You may want to ask yourself this question to help you start thinking about VAS. As a customer, would I rather be here (your establishment) then somewhere else? What can a restaurant or bar do to add value? This can be done in many ways, and is limited only by your experience and imagination. Here are a few suggestions: 1. Create signature food & drink items 2. Insure that you have a happy staff, who like their jobs, and well trained 3. Improve the quality of food 4. Improve appearance of menu 5. Add entertainment: (DJ, Karaoke, Ladies Night, Parties of all kinds, Bands, fun experience, etc.) 6. Bigger, better, or more TVs 7. Redecorating (cleanup, fix-up, paint) 8. Modernize bathrooms & monitor them hourly 9. Use social media, Facebook & Twitter and develop a website 10. Hire professional consultants to help you reach your goals Does your team think of people who visit your establishment as customers, patrons, or guests? There are subtle differences among these designations that can reflect your staff’s attitude. Certainly one of the easiest ways of adding VAS is treating people as guests. Our Spotter Report show employee indifference towards clientele when they are not viewed as guests. When employees treat people in a way that they feel welcomed, and appreciated, they will become loyal and keep returning to your place of business. Success is built on great attitudes, and quality service. Do your guests feel that this is “my place” where I get personalized service, good food, and feel appreciated? As the owner or manager, it is your responsibility to insure that all employees are attentive, have good attitudes and pay attention to details. Using spotters and taking liquor audits provides invaluable information on employee conduct. Adding “Value Added” to your product and service never ends, it just improves with time. If you would like assistance in on what you have to built, I would be happy to help you.

Hello All, I just want to bring to everybody's attention about a topic that came up at the BID meeting yesterday. Pat and Laura Carlino (Carlino's) along with their broker were in attendance and spoke to us in regards to asking the BID board to support them bringing a R license into the borough from another town in Chester County. They have previously gone in front of Borough Council with their proposal but withdrew the application because they were not properly prepared to present their case. I was asked my opinion by the BID board yesterday and voiced my opinions and concerns with Borough Council possibly allowing outside licenses from coming in. I also strongly urged the BID Board not to take a stance on this issue before each and every member of the restaurant and bar community be contacted and informed about the potential of this happening. I did suggest that to resolve this they apply for an Economic Development License. I believe if they allow this to happen it will open the flood gates in the future for potential licenses entering the borough which will only further saturate the market in the borough. I have the utmost respect for the Carlino family and the business they have created in the borough and our community, but I believe that allowing outside licenses come in could cause potential issues for us in the future. Please share this information with those who I do not have email addresses for, and I would be happy to hear feedback, for or against and I will pass it along to the BID Board. Thanks Everyone
