Description

Rethinking Schools is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education through social justice teaching and education activism. Our magazine, books, and other resources promote equity and racial justice in the classroom. We encourage grassroots efforts in our schools and communities to enhance the learning and well being of our children, and to build broad democratic movements for social and environmental justice. http://rethinkingschools.org We are the premier publication for the progressive education reform community. We are a non-profit publisher who publishes a quarterly magazine and books. Our focus is on teaching for social justice, anti-racist education, and issues of equity and equality in public education policy and practice today. Rethinking Schools remains firmly committed to equity and to the vision that public education is central to the creation of a humane, caring, multiracial democracy. While writing for a broad audience, Rethinking Schools emphasizes problems facing urban schools, particularly issues of race. Throughout its history, Rethinking Schools has tried to balance classroom practice and educational theory. It is an activist publication, with articles written by and for teachers, parents, and students. Yet it also addresses key policy issues, such as vouchers and marketplace-oriented reforms, funding equity, and school-to-work. Brazilian educator Paulo Freire wrote that teachers should attempt to "live part of their dreams within their educational space." Rethinking Schools believes that classrooms can be places of hope, where students and teachers gain glimpses of the kind of society we could live in and where students learn the academic and critical skills needed to make that vision a reality.

General Info

The essence of Rethinking Schools is a commitment to questioning the dominant narratives relating to what, why and how we have learned as a foundation of our social justice work. Exploring silences, analyzing power dynamics, and examining dynamics of race, class, gender, and ability are inherent to that commitment. For almost thirty years, we have sought to build these spaces in our classrooms and communities. Our Facebook page is a place to continue this work. We are dedicated to lifting up the voices of those who are commonly silenced and being willing to put forth ideas that call into question the versions of history which are commonly told. We invite others to participate and question with us. We will not, however, tolerate abusive language of any kind. If you are fundamentally offended by the nature of this questioning, we ask that you respect the space we are trying to create. Please read articles in their entirety before commenting. Please know that abusive comments and commenters will be blocked. Please understand that we are attempting to cultivate a culture of resistance and we believe that holding spaces such as these are critical to finding new ways to learn and live together rooted in social justice, anti-oppression, and anti-racist principles.
