I’m an entrepreneur and technologist who works and lives in Sacramento, California. I’ve worked in State government for over 25 years and most of those years were in the Information Technology (IT) career field. In 2001 I took a leap of faith and resigned from State service to pursue my dream of creating a home-based business. My fellow employees at the time thought I’d lost my senses throwing away 24+ years of State service for a risky venture. It was a risk and it was about to be my BIGGEST ADVENTURE of my life! My home-based business was launched on the premise of providing Information Technology (IT) services AND remembering that everything in life can be an Adventure… so it was born AdventureIT2 inviting people to “adventure Information technology too”. I focused on supporting small businesses with Websites, Technology Consulting and Personal Computer (PC) support. Soon after its initial beginnings I began using eBay as a tool to buy and sell merchandise. As I learned more about the eBay tools available I added that service offering too, supporting individuals and businesses on how they could utilize the power of buying & selling on eBay. Wow, I truly enjoyed using eBay and soon became an Education Specialist trained by eBay! I was teaching classes on Buying & Selling on eBay at the local Learning Exchange in Sacramento and soon volunteered to work at the Education Specialist’s booth at several eBay Live conventions. I setup a Meetup group, so other eBay enthusiasts could come together and share ideas for using eBay more effectively. It was fun to be using eBay eventually selling everything from a rare $4,000 Whistling Jim antique doorstop to a Motor-home for $16,000 and lots of “stuff” in between! BUT as many adventures go they will always have their ups and downs and in 2008 my business was at an all time low. As our U.S. economy began to crumble in 2006-07 AdventureIT2 began to slow more and more. After many months of sleepless nights and agonizing about what to do I decided to return to working for the State of California. TODAY in 2012 I’m seeing things in a much different light. In fact to be truthful I’d never really noticed any lights at the end of the tunnel until now … Retirement! So now having worked in State government for over 28 years it’s time to figure out what to do about retirement! So today I’m thinking about the future, making some plans, putting some things in place NOW so my retirement days will be worth working towards. FACT: I know today that I will not be retiring like my parents did back in their work world days. My retirement will instead be about continuing to work in some form or another until… well I don’t know the “until when” part just yet. I know I don’t want to be sitting around in a rocking chair on the front porch, not that my parents ever did that but I want to keep being involved with my passions and (hopefully) make money to enhance my retirement years instead of thinking they’ll be limited by fixed income and “nothing to do”. “Building The Bridge to Retirement” What does retirement look like for you?
