Bar Profit Tip of the Week - April 12, 2016 It happens to most bar owners. They get caught up in day to day operations, never having enough time in the day to get to everything that needs to be done. Putting out fires and taking care of pressing issues goes to the top of the list, and important but non-urgent items get pushed aside. The mistake I’m talking about? It seems simple but it is oh so important - doing homework about your competition and the latest trends by going out to other bars and restaurants! By visiting other bars and restaurants as a customer you will learn about the latest changes made by your competitors, observe and collect ideas about what new ideas you may want include in your business, and help you spot developing trends. You will also gain a fresh perspective when you start noting things that you don’t like about the place you are visiting and the importance of all the little details. Is the parking lot clean? How about the front door? Is the music right for the ambiance of the place? Are the customers treated in a welcoming manner and made to feel wanted? Is your order taken promptly and served correctly? What types of promotions are being run? What types of customers are there? Is the management hands on, or in the background? How is the menu designed? Has the portion size changed? Make a point to get out at least once a week, checking out the competition in your immediate area and also across town. Also, always visit other bars and restaurants when you travel. Having first hand intelligence about your competition and what other bars and restaurants are doing will expose you to new ideas and help you stay on top of your game. Plus, going out can be loads of fun! Make a point to consistently schedule time to check out other establishments. What you learn will be invaluable to your business and ultimately the actionable steps you take will impact your bottom line.
