Overlooking stunning blue waters and famous pink sand beaches, the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club is a classic Bermuda hotel. Since opening, Hamilton Princess has been known as the “Grande Dame of Bermuda.” Among the hibiscus and oleander, on the shores of a picturesque natural harbor, Hamilton Princess Hotel is a luxury resort and an elegant tribute to the old world splendor that is Bermuda. Take a dip in our saltwater Infinity pool or freshwater lap pool or walk along the pink sands of our new Princess Beach Club located at the South Beaches, with complimentary transfers to and from the hotel. Frolic with the dolphins at dockyard, or use our new Princess Marina as a home base for sailing trips around Hamilton harbor and the Great Sound. Hamilton Princess opened its doors on January 1, 1885. Bermuda had gained international recognition two years earlier in 1883 when Princess Louise, the fourth daughter of England’s Queen Victoria, visited for a winter retreat and called the island “a place of eternal spring.” Harley Trott, a leading businessman of the period and head of Trott & Cox, the steamship agents and purveyors of meat for the British military, was determined to build a hotel that would attract affluent Americans, who would summer in the Berkshires and winter in Bermuda. Other seaside resorts were being built and a “posh” hotel would likely compete with other destinations like Palm Beach. In 1939, when the world went to war, Hamilton Princess was under British Censorship and home to Allied servicemen. The basement of the hotel became an intelligence center and way station where all mail, radio and telegraphic traffic bound for Europe, the U.S. and the Far East were intercepted and analyzed by 1,200 censors, before being routed to their final destination. Rumor has it that it was nicknamed “Bletchley-in-the-Tropics” after the English country house where the “Enigma” code was broken.
