The organization now known as Safe Refuge began in 1988 and was known as the Substance Abuse Foundation (SAF) for most of that time.

Description

Now in its 26th year, Safe Refuge is known for offering a complete continuum of care: from residential and outpatient drug and alcohol treatment to helping clients ultimately gain employment so that they may retake control of their lives. At Safe Refuge, we believe everyone deserves the chance to recover from addictions to alcohol or drugs and so our programs are open to the population at large – not just those financially able to fund their own recovery. We also serve clients with combined mental health and addiction issues (co-occurring disorders).

General Info

Safe Refuge is a place where people who are struggling can come to discover a supportive and caring recovery community. We take pride in our open arms approach, where people from diverse backgrounds can seek, and find, the help they need. We do not discriminate in any way and, in fact, are sometimes found as a last resort by those seeking help. Our primary funding comes from government agencies designed to help those in need. Our treatment center is fully licensed and certified by the State of California. We also have national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for residential and outpatient treatment; community housing for those seeking drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation, including those with a criminal justice history; and community employment services: job development. We differ from many organizations you will encounter because of our specific, government-funded programs for the homeless, veterans, parolees, HIV/AIDS patients, single women and/or men with children and co-occurring disorders. Each professionally developed and implemented treatment plan is unique to that individual. Our difference also comes from our family-oriented residential campus in Long Beach, California. Eleven houses and two apartment buildings are clustered together close to our treatment center, where residents obtain ongoing treatments that include group and/or individual counseling. We also offer alcohol- and drug-free housing for those who complete treatment and wish to spend more time in a Safe Refuge. At Safe Refuge, our clients have the chance to regain the lives they may have lost due to substance abuse. Our employment service, Ventures, is an important part of our program, offering interview preparation skills, job training and job search so they may find gainful employment.
