Ridesharing has become an overwhelming success – not surprising when you consider what we’ve all had to put up with in terms of taxis. I’ve spent considerable time researching the market and product, in terms of becoming involved and one company really got my attention – Shofer. They’ve gone the legal Small Charter Vehicle way, using Toyota Camrys (mostly Hybrids) and unlike Uber, they have made a considerable investment, buying just over $2.5 million worth of new cars and then setting the cars up to meet all possible government specifications, in terms of passenger and driver safety. The vehicles cannot be started without a zero (0.00) reading on the inbuilt breathalyser, there are external and internal cameras mounted in the car and these can be remotely accessed at any time by the 24hr operations centre. The safety factor, especially for female passengers, is brilliant. The Shofer App – yes, you can only book by using the free app – has a red panic button and if a passenger presses it, the operations centre , virtually takes control of the car and they can instantly access camera footage from the previous ten minutes. I might add, there’s also a panic button for drivers, which does the same thing. The cars are licenced as Small Charter Vehicles (SCVs) and carry full insurance, including the prerequisite Public Liability, drivers go through thorough Police and Licence checks and must have an F-Class extension. The cars meet and in fact, exceed the expected Legislation requirements of 1st July 2016. The system is a franchise operation with drivers leasing the cars and the company is aiming to have 205 cars on the road in Perth as soon as Toyota can supply them. That in itself is a great story, in that Shofer is literally keeping the Toyota plant at Altona running with their orders – yes, the cars are made in Australia. Shofer are using Perth to establish the operation in Australia and plan to expand across the country. In terms of passenger cost, a Shofer car is more expensive than an Uber car, but cheaper than the normal taxi. I think it’s the future of the taxi industry – real service, real safety, new vehicles (changed every five years) and an absolute commitment to safety and quality. So much so, we’ve taken out a franchise with Shofer and started operating a car as of yesterday. You need to download the free App from either Google Play or Apple’s App Store and input your details – name, address, mobile, email and credit card etc. They are still tweaking the App – having only launched three or four weeks ago and will be very shortly introducing a ‘Select your own driver’ button, however at this stage, if you’d like to book me – Car 55 – the easiest way is to text me the time, date and place, then when I arrive to pick you up from wherever, you then make the car request on the app and it goes to the nearest car – me! There is a dedicated mobile in the car: 0429 623 915, it is of course hands free, but in terms of writing down pick up info, a text message is far easier in all respects.
