So, we take a pause today and take a moment to make a personal statement. I have been away on sabbatical and am finishing by working at Opera Theatre Saint Louis. Today I found myself a little distracted think about the graduating class of 2015. I wondered what they were doing, how the recognition was going, and what would happen at the dinner tonight. It's always great to see a class reach graduation. You get to reflect on all the hard work that went into the last 4 years and all the obstacles that were overcome and how each person grew and came into their own. A graduation is also so amazing because of the potential it represents. What will become of each student? What careers will they have? Will they have families and children? Will someone I have taught win a Tony? A graduation also makes me sad. I have to admit it is one of the days that I just dread- and for very selfish reasons- it is the day of unspoken goodbyes. The people you have worked with for the last four years have to go; have to start their lives, and careers, and families, and win Tonys. And you may get to see them once or twice a year rather than once or twice a week. It is part of being a teacher and a part of working in theatre. So, I want to say how proud I am of the class of 2015 and how great it was to work with you and how much fun it was to see you grow and develop and learn.....and I want to say thanks. I wish you all the success in the world and happiness and joy. Also know that you were in my thoughts all day.
