Update on laser use by hygienists and TSBDE: Today the TSBDE voted to reject the laser task force committee’s recommendation to rescind our rights to use lasers for non-surgical bacterial elimination. We are grateful to the board for listening to the research based testimony to allow us to provide quality care for our patients. However, this issue is not over yet. It has been sent to the Dental Hygiene Advisory Committee (DHAC) for further review, and we will keep you updated on further developments. We appreciate all of the help hygienists and supporting dentists have given on this issue. Please contact us with any questions or comments. SBDE Task Force Recommends NO for Lasers and Hygienists in TX! * SBDE task force met and is NOT supportive of RDH’s using lasers. * Committee states that laser assisted dental hygienists are being used by unethical dentists as a way to increase production. * TWO MEMBERS OF THE 4 MEMBER COMMITTEE DECIDED FOR THE COMMITTEE WITHOUT A VOTE TO RECOMMEND THE SBDE RESCIND THE CURRENT POLICY AND MAKE A RULE ONLY ALLOWING RDH’S TO USE LASERS FOR ASSESSMENT (DIAGNODENT)! * Next state board meeting: August 8th. Dentists who want to continue delegating bacterial elimination by use of lasers to their hygienists are asked to be present and give oral testimony to the SBDE. * Committee concerned about efficacy of lasers and bacterial reduction. "NOT enough evidence" * Testimony given to rescind policy stopping RDH’s from using lasers and that it isn’t "effective or safe for hygienists to use." * Private Message Melissa Lester Scott at or Lynda Brotherton Bean at for more information.

ATTENTION ALL ADHA NONMEMBER TEXAS RDH'S: TDHA is working on several VERY IMPORTANT legislative and regulatory issues. In an effort to have a quick way to communicate effectively with as many hygienists as possible, we are asking for current emails. We want to be a valid voice for Texas hygiene and value your opinion. Please private message me with your email address so that we can update our database.

Each year, dental hygiene students at the UTHSCSA are required to complete 3 hours of shadowing a RDH. Several of you have offered to have a shadow for a day before, or your office has participated in this program! I have been asked to send out a request for those who are willing to allow a dental hygiene student to shadow them for 3 hours and sign the required paperwork (which I can send you if you provide your name and e-mail address). If anybody is interested, please contact me with your personal and office contact information so that I may send correspondence to the instructors at the UTHSCSA. I will also have a few sheets printed out at the sign in table at the meeting on Tuesday if you would like to sign up there! Contact: Kristen Kunz, SADDHS Secretary at

Today is the American Dental Association Mission of Mercy project!! This is a HUGE clinic where we help as many dental patients as we possibly can following the convention which has been going on since Thursday!! Dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and many other volunteers have been hard at work since 5:30 this morning and will continue to work until 5:30pm, seeing as many patients as they can fit in! SADDHS has joined forces with this huge ADA convention and dental professionals from all over the USA to make this project/clinic a success!! Thank you to all who volunteered and gave your support! If you are a potential patient, you can wait in line at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center to be treated on a first come-first serve basis; clinic doors will close to the public at 5:00pm, so arrive as early as possible for the best chance to be seen!
