The San Jose Alumnae Chapter (SJA) was chartered by 18 dynamic, professional women on November 8, 1970 in San Jose, California. Today, with over 70 members, the chapter remains in the forefront: crafting the debate on public policy and social issues, creating opportunities for higher quality education through the provision of annual scholarships and innovative youth development programs, and stimulating economic growth through its evolving and diverse community-based partnerships in Santa Clara's County. Emulating the original 22 Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, the members of SJA continue to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to persons in most need through distinct programs that emphasize economic and educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University, the Sorority is currently a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women. This includes over 1,000 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea. The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Educational Development, Political Awareness and Involvement, and International Awareness and Involvement.
