Description

Since 1937, the Sara Holbrook Community Center (SHCC) has been providing a myriad of programs to meet the needs of low-income children and their families. Annually, 4,000 individuals including immigrant and refugee populations attend the Center's events and use the Center's programs including: preschool, after school care for elementary school students, elementary school-age summer camp, teen drop-in, youth adventure camp, year-round middle school enrichment classes, English classes for adults and children, and emergency food assistance. The Center is has two locations- the Old North End of Burlington, Vermont, which, according to the 2000 U.S. Census, constitutes the highest concentration of poverty in the state of Vermont; and the New North End of Burlington directly behind Hunt Middle School. Importantly, all the Center's programs are free or low-cost.

General Info

Since its inception, the mission of the Sara Holbrook Community Center (SHCC) has been to provide programming responsive to the needs of low-income families, including immigrant and refugee populations. Originally called the Burlington Community Center, Sara M. Holbrook opened the Center in November of 1937. Ms. Holbrook was a clinical psychologist and a professor at the University of Vermont. After working in neighborhood or settlement houses in New York City, she brought this model back to Burlington. Initially, the Center provided a nursery school and various classes such as cooking, sewing, English, and citizenship for primarily Italian, Irish, and French-Canadian immigrants. Today, the Center continues Ms. Holbrook’s vision by offering numerous programs that meet the needs of newly arrived and settled families throughout Chittenden County.
