Sausalito Village is dedicated to enhancing the ability of our members to live independently, remaining active and integral to our community as we age. Sausalito Village is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, a 501(c)(3) organization, and is not affiliated with Marin Villages.

General Info

Village organizations are the outgrowth of a concept that originated a little more than a decade ago in the Beacon Hill area in Boston. A group of neighbors, most of them longtime residents of Beacon Hill, in agreement that they wanted to remain in their own homes as long as possible (“age in place”), banded together to develop programs that would allow them to attain this objective. In 2002 they opened Beacon Hill Village, an organization that one of their founders has described as “a nonprofit support group designed specifically to help older people stay in their homes and communities.” As word has spread, village-like organizations have been springing up across the country. One writer has described the village movement as “a textbook example of how technology can help older Americans improve the quality of their lives, remain in their homes as they age, and possibly save a bundle of money in the process.” And, he adds, “with the government facing enormous deficits for the foreseeable future, villages also represent a welcome, cost-effective way for citizens to take responsibility for themselves during an era of declining public resources.” By now there are well over 100 villages, either currently open, or in preliminary stages of development. Sausalito Village commenced operations in October 2010. At the time it was operating under a 501(c)(3) countywide umbrella organization called Marin Village. In 2012 Sausalito Village split off from Marin Village (now Marin Villages). Since that time it has been operating as a standalone organization under the fiscal sponsorship of Community Initiatives, a California non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose sole mission is to serve as a fiscal sponsor for non-profit programs. Sausalito Village currently has a total of just over 200 members, living in approximately 135 different households. We are committed to making the program available to everyone who can benefit from our services, without regard to their economic status, and offer partial or total waivers to those for whom membership is truly unaffordable.
