Supporting efforts to improve funding and service levels for the national award-winning San José Public Library system. http://sjlibrary.org
Over the past three fiscal years, the General Fund budget for the San José Library Department has been cut by 25%, staffing has been reduced by more than 25%, and branch service has been reduced to 4 days per week. The people of San José deserve better, especially at a time when 12% of Silicon Valley is out of work and so many residents need the resources and safe haven that libraries provide. The City Council traditionally gives the Library $0.03 for every $100.00 of assessed property taxes that come to the City. The Save San José Libraries Initiative would create a yearly appropriation to the Library of $0.04 for every $100.00. We're talking about one one-hundredth of one percent. When the current parcel tax expires in two years, San José Libraries will once again be on the crucible. We have an opportunity to use existing funds to make up for the loss in parcel tax funding and create a surplus fund to support San Jose Libraries through the ups and downs of economic cycles. Please help us Save San José Libraries and ensure a vibrant future for our children and our city.
