Description

SBS Radio (Special Broadcasting Service) is the cornerstone of Australia's multicultural story. The world's most linguistically diverse media entity, SBS Radio is many things to many people: news, information, entertainment and education. SBS Radio started in Sydney and Melbourne in 1975 as two AM stations transmitting important information about government services. Today, SBS Radio is a bridge linking more than 3.1 million Australians who speak a language other than English. With diverse cultural and community views, SBS Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day; 68 language programs are broadcast each week, as well as World View, our multicultural current affairs program, and Alchemy, our youth affairs and music program; producing 264 unique hours of programming each week, with correspondents across the globe. A few community minded people voluntarily started the Sinhalese services in 1986 in Sydney. Kalinga Seneviratna, Somaratna Dissanayaka, Piyasoma Medis, Don Wickrma, S. Piyasena, Kithsiri Karunarathna, Asoka Rajapaksha were among those volunteers. Vernon Abeysekera, Karu & Ramani Liyanarachchi initiated Melbourne Sinhala service in the late eighties. After the major restructuring of SBS radio in 1992, Dr Don Wickrama was appointed as head of Sinhala Group with Dr Palitha Ganewatta as its part time producer. Under the rescheduled plan the first Sinhalese program was broadcast on 26th October 1992, 20 years ago. Mr Elmo Perera was responsible to conduct Sinhalese program from Melbourne from 1994 to 1998. Upa Upadasa & Neelika Kottachchi were also worked with Elmo Perera as contributors. Mr Vijaya Karunasena in Melbourne joined as a part time producer in 1998. After Dr Wickrama retired in 2007, Dr Palitha Ganewatta was appointed as the Executive Producer of Sinhalese Program. Every SBS Sinhalese programme counts over 20,000 listeners. As per statistical data the Sinhalese listenership has increased 40% during the last 5 years. SBS Sinhalese Radio can be heard online any time of the day by visiting www.sbs.com.au/sinhalese. SBS Sinhalese Facebook provides listeners an avenue to share their thoughts about the program. Sydney listeners can tune to 97.7 FM every Sunday at 12.00 to listen 1 hour weekly Sinhalese program. SBS is now broadcast as digital radio and listeners are able to tune in on TV digital channel 39 to listen live to this program. Annual outside broadcasting sessions of SBS Sinhalese provides an unique opportunity to the community to participate live on the program. Bimonthly Talk Back sessions, which were initiated two years ago are also very popular, here listeners join live with their thoughts, concerns and valuable suggestions. During its 20 year period SBS Sinhalese has supported Sri Lankan and Australian communities in their hour of need. SBS Sinhalese raised more than AU$13,000 to support victims of the 2004 Sri Lankan Tsunami, during a brief one hour program. SBS Sinhalese was able to raise AU $ 23,000 to support Victorian Black Saturday bush fire victims in February 2009. SBS Sinhalese was praised for its impartial and balanced coverage of political events during turbulent political conflicts in our mother land. As the Sinhala speaking community in Australasia has drastically increased during last decade, SBS management plans are under way to increase the air time allocations, which will result in having an extra one hour Sinhalese program a week from next year.
