MISSION The School will research, teach and promote physical, mental and social well-being from the level of the individual to society. Introduction The School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen's University occupies a unique position as a leader in health enhancement, disease prevention and human performance. The School moved into its new, state-of-the-art building at 28 Division Street in Jan 2010. The building is equipped with 8 main laboratory areas, dedicated study space for all graduate students, undergraduate and graduate lounge areas, computer lab, and teaching theatres and classrooms. Research Over the next five years, the School will work to strengthen and extend its place as an innovative leader in the development, advancement, and delivery of academic and professional programs related to physical education, kinesiology, and health. In its curriculum, professional activities, and research initiatives the School incorporates the World Health Organization's assertion that health is: "the state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being - not merely the absence of disease and infirmity". Values The School reaffirms its commitment on pedagogical and research levels to inter-disciplinary initiatives within School units, other university faculties, departments, and other academic institutions. The School reaffirms its belief in the vital interplay between disciplinary and professional areas within our program. The School reaffirms its commitment to provide undergraduate students a quality liberal arts education within the context of the profession of physical and health education. The School reaffirms its role in developing quality public education and its role as an active ally with other post-secondary institutions, government, and voluntary organizations within sports and recreation sectors. History Founded in 1946, the School was originally the School of Physical and Health Education. Effective May 2006, the School was renamed the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. Teaching The School offers two direct entry undergraduate programs, the Honours Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and the Honours Bachelor of Physical Health Education, with a total enrolment of approximately 200 students in each.Both programs have courses in: applied exercise science; the psychology and socio-cultural studies of physical activity and health; and, physical activity epidemiology and health promotion.The BPHEH also offers practicum courses that allow graduates to apply to education with physical education as a teachable at the secondary school level.The BSCH in Kinesiology is designed to allow students to pursue a career as a kinesiologist.The Bachelor of Arts minor (general) and medial (honours) in Health Studies and introduced a Bachelor of Arts (honours) program with a major concentration. The School offers a thesis-based Master’s program (M.A. and M.Sc.) and thesis-based Doctoral program (Ph.D.) to approximately 60 full-time students each year. All graduate students receive their degree in Kinesiology and Health Studies. Studies are available in various areas of expertise including: biomechanics; ergonomics; exercise physiology; health promotion; physical activity epidemiology; psychology of sport and physical activity; socio-cultural studies of sport, health and the body. The School will research, teach and promote physical, mental and social well-being from the level of the individual to society.
