Description

We are one of the UK's leading centres for international-quality languages and cultures research and teaching. The School belongs to the Faculty of Arts, which was recently ranked in the top 50 in the world by the QS world university rankings. We are home to over 2000 students, together with approximately 140 staff, many of whom are native speakers of the languages they research and teach. We offer undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies; Chinese; Classics; French; German; Italian; Japanese; Linguistics and Phonetics; Russian; Spanish, Portuguese and Latin-American Studies; Thai and South-East Asian Studies; and Translation Studies. Additionally, well over 1000 students, often from overseas, follow courses in our English Language and Languages for All units in the Language Centre, where there is also the opportunity to study a number of other languages including Japanese and Korean. You can study programmes from across an exceptional range of subjects. Our teaching excellence is shown by the high levels of satisfaction our students report and by the recent Student Academic Experience Review, which commended our academic standards, wide range of research-led modules, and the strong commitment of staff and students to the work of the School. The study of languages, cultures and linguistics enjoys over a century of history at the University of Leeds. We are proud of our tradition, but also of the expansion and innovation during the last decade, which have seen us broaden our activities to include Interpreting & Translating, South East Asian Studies, and World Cinemas, involving a major programme of investment in new staff and facilities.
