Net Metering – Because we live in a state that provides at least 319 days of sunshine each year, there is an opportunity for your solar array to produce more energy than your household consumes. When this occurs, you can use this energy at night when your panels aren’t producing energy, or in a future month, without having to purchase energy from PNM. Essentially, Net Metering is a “bank” of energy that increases or decreases depending on the amount of energy your system produces and the amount of energy you use each month. RECs – Each kilowatt-hour of electricity your system produces is sent directly to the grid and mixed in with other electricity generated by other sources such as coal fired plants. And because PNM has an obligation to generate 25% of its electricity by renewable resources by 2020, you, the solar customer, are helping them to meet their portfolio requirements. And because of this, PNM pays you for helping them meet these standards. The present rate is 3.5 cents per kWh, decreasing as more solar capacity is installed by customers. PNM will pay you for eight years. Guaranteed Performance – Solar panel manufacturers provide a 25 year warranty, inverters include a 10 year warranty and Affordable Solar will guarantee the production of your system. If it doesn’t produce what we say it will, we’ll pay you the difference! Environment – Obviously generating electricity from a renewable resource, sunlight, is good for the environment.
