Description

Based in Inverness, at the disease surveillance centre of the Scottish Rural College ((SRUC,formerly Scottish Agricultural College (SAC)) Veterinary Services laboratory, the scheme undertakes post-mortem examinations on suitable cases to try to uncover the cause of death. Post-mortem examinations provide a unique insight into diseases, environmental contaminant levels, reproductive patterns, diet and other aspects of the general health of populations. This information can provide essential baseline data to help detect any future outbreaks of disease, unusual mortality events, anthropogenic stressors or responses to climate change. The Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme aims to provide a systematic and coordinated approach to the surveillance of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), pinnipeds (seals), basking sharks and marine turtles stranded on the Scottish coast.
