Manivanh and Malcolm both came from a sewing background when younger and since meeting have gone on to share a a wonderful creative life together that they are happy to share with their many customers. Manivanh was taught the art of tailoring at the young age of 15 after leaving her homeland of Laos as a refugee. On her arrival in Australia she attended the Canberra TAFE, while supporting her Mother and younger sister, and received certificates in Interior Design and Fashion Design. She eventually gained employment at Canberra Sewing Centre where she extended her knowledge to the workings of the modern sewing machine. Since then ,teaching and creative design has been her forte and she has had many of her works published in Australian Sewing and Quilting Magazines. Malcolm learned to sew at an early age too as his parents owned and operated sewing stores and Knitwit shops in Canberra and some of that knowledge had to have rubbed off. There is a story that while in the army, after leaving school, he had a little business going doing mending on his little Elna Lotus for other soldiers. He returned to Canberra on leaving the army and worked as a sewing machine technician at Canberra Sewing Centre. That is where he met Manivanh and the rest, as they say, is history. Now in their own business of the Sewing Machine Doctor, which they have had for 19 years, their customers can benefit from all the experience they have between them. Manivanh and Malcolm place a lot of value on training for themselves and are constantly updating their expertise. Both now have many qualifications each in their own special areas, Manivanh in creative use of the sewing machine and Malcolm in the use of sewing software and of course the technical side. Manivanh has this year undertaken to train to be a qualified machine technician too so she can work also in this growing side of their business. Their business has won many industry awards over the years. Together Manivanh and Malcolm offer the most comprehensive sewing centre in Canberra and their pleasure in what they do is evident the moment you walk into their store.
