Description

We are a community where Y'shua HaMashiackh is celebrated and the Word of Abba Father is honoured with joyful obedience by His Grace through the power of the Ruackh HaKodesh. This is a historical perspective that focuses on just one of many significant streams that Abba Father used to bring together our Messianic congregation here in Abbotsford. Prior to and concurrent with the events recorded below there were years of other's foundational work done through the power of Ruackh HaKodesh through chosen human instruments of Yeshua. The following gives an account of the most recent pastoral involvement & influence of Rev. Murray & Marta Archibald whose timely obedience & presence - along with other faithful ones mentioned above - served Abba's purposes in the confluence of streams that has become this fascinating story of Shabbat Shel Shalom Messianic Fellowship. Interestingly, our part of the story began in eastern Europe ... Marta Hyklova - an atheistic Jew whose majority of family members had been murdered in the holocaust (more than 90% did not survive) - personally suffered persecution under communism in eastern Europe and decided to make a daring escape to come to Canada. After seven attempts, her eighth was successful and with her children she crossed the border into Italy and freedom in the summer of 1983. After spending some time in a refugee camp this family finally arrived in Canada in December of that year. Some time later her parents and one grandmother also escaped and settled in the Vancouver area. While growing up Marta had been exposed to her Jewish culture through her grandmother who regularly observed Shabbat and the feasts of the Lord - although behind heavily covered windows. Her grandmother loved her heritage and often spoke of how wonderful it will be when Messiah comes and establishes his kingdom of peace. When Marta was still a child she remembers engaging her grandmother in these talks and somehow speaking from a yet to be found faith she said, "Hasn't the Messiah already come and isn't His name Jezis (pronounced Yeshish in Czech - ie, Yeshua)?" Fast forward to 1996 ... Marta was half way through a Bachelor of Education degree program at the University of Manitoba (where she was a double Math and Physics major) when she faced a devastating tragedy. Her house was consumed by a fire and she suffered the loss all her family's material goods. Without content insurance and already operating on meager funds her studies would almost certainly have to be interrupted - except for a local missionary pastor whom the Lord had led to begin a church plant in her neighbourhood. That pastor and home mission helped Marta continue with her studies uninterrupted and arranged for the local community to provide all needed household furniture and clothing. Within a few weeks Marta and her daughters were restored with even better things than what they had lost in the fire. It was because of the love and care of this Baptist Mission and its Pastor in south Winnipeg that Marta accepted an invitation to attend one of their worship services - after all it was the polite thing to do. She determined that she would attend just once to demonstrate her appreciation and then get back to her science and education studies. However, once she heard the gospel message she returned week after week to hear the Word of God taught and explained. At that time the church was participating in the Jesus Video outreach project and one of those videos was placed in Marta's hands along with a Bible. Wanting to know what she was getting herself into and genuinely spiritually hungry, Marta read through the entire Bible - from Genesis to Revelation - in just three days. After several months and being assured that accepting her own Messiah "was the most Jewish thing she could do" Marta received her Saviour and King by faith and gave public confession at her baptism at Pelican Lake, Manitoba in 1998. Less than a year later she married the Pastor who had helped her, led her to the Messiah and baptized her. Fast forward again to the spring of 2010 ... by this time Pastor Murray & Marta Archibald were leading the Abbotsford Baptist Church just east of Metro Vancouver. In May of 2010 a vision was placed before the congregation of Abbotsford Baptist Church to "Brighten The Corner Where You Are" and four care groups were initiated in various neighbourhoods of the city of Abbotsford, BC. The Sumas Mountain Care Group was begun in the home of Pastor Murray & Marta Archibald and regularly saw 7 gather each week from September until April of 2011. A favorite Messianic song of the group that year was "I'm of the seed of Abraham and his blessings rest on me". Over the summer of 2011 Pastor Murray & Marta were led of the Lord to make plans to celebrate Yeshua HaMashiackh with more Messianic music along themes that pointed to Him in the Jewish calendar. This began with Rosh Hashannah (Feast of Trumpets) at the end of September and 21 individuals filled their renovated, expanded basement area. Very soon after that a public meeting place was rented at the Elementary Campus of Abbotsford Christian School - just above Clayburn Village. Thus the Sumas Mountain Care Group of Abbotsford Baptist Church became known as the Shabbat Shel Shalom Messianic Fellowship. In addition to our regular Shabbat services, this newly formed Messianic Fellowship hosted a Hanukkah Party in December of 2011 and saw 105 celebrants gather together; during the winter and spring of 2012 Shabbat Shel Shalom Messianic Fellowship came together for its first Purim Party and then, in April we celebrated our first Passover Seder as a K'hillah (community) with others from the Lower Mainland of BC. Over the course of time it was evident that we were becoming a congregation that reflected the axiom - "Yeshua Hu Ha Adon" (Yeshua is Lord). During the winter of 2014 Pastor Murray & Marta Archibald-Fisher were transitioned from their pastorate at Abbotsford Baptist Church to shepherd the Shabbat Shel Shalom Messianic Fellowship. The Pastor continues as a credentialed minister of the gospel under the British Columbia Baptist Conference and the Baptist General Conference of Canada. Currently, Shabbat Shel Shalom Messianic Fellowship meets on the campus of Columbia Bible College. Our services are every Shabbat (Saturday) afternoon at 2:30 PM and our K'hillah (congregation) gathers in the College Chapel.
