Description

I rehair and repair bows for all string instruments. My San Francisco studio is located in the Kanbar Performing Arts Center, 44 Page St., Suite 400, in Hayes Valley, convenient to the San Francisco Conservatory and Davies Symphony Hall. Shop hours are Monday through Friday from 1 - 5:30, and other times by appointment. I can offer a limited number of same-day rehairs by appointment (assuming that the bow has no other condition issues). TEXT is the fastest way to reach me. I play, too, so I know how important your bow is to you. I am also keenly aware of the financial investment that a fine bow represents. Therefore, I take the time to make every rehair the best possible for that bow, and I take a conservative approach to repairs and restoration. About Me I received my initial training in bow making from Charles Espey in Port Townsend, 1999-2000. Espey instills commitment to the highest standards of workmanship, a grounding in French working methods and tool handling, and an eye for detail and style. From 2001 to 2003 I worked at David Stone Violins in Seattle where I received a thorough training in routine repairs from Espey's first teacher, Robert Shallock, who has spent most of his career in France. Throughout my career Paul Siefried has also been especially generous in with his expertise in repair. More recently, I have spent time working with bow maker and restorer Rodney Mohr at his shop in Ashland, Ohio. Most recently, I worked in Philadelphia, in the violin shop of Antiques Roadshow appraiser Fred Oster. Located in Center City, the shop serves many members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, faculty and students from the Curtis Institute and Temple Universities, visiting soloists, and other professionals. Here I saw an endless stream of fine bows, and also what the ravages of time and bad bow work can do to them. I also did bow condition reports Tarisio, the New York violin auction house. I am currently on the board of directors of the Violin Society of America. For two weeks each summer I attend the VSA-Oberlin Bow Makers' Workshop, an international gathering of top bow makers. I also have a performance degree from the Early Music Institute at Indiana University and was a 1998 US Irish Fiddle Champion. You can find my trio, Three Mile Stone elsewhere on Facebook. The Strings Magazine Years In 2003, I moved to San Francisco and soon took a job as Lutherie Editor for Strings magazine. For six fascinating years, I traveled the country, covered every corner of the violin business from top to bottom, met countless characters, and wrote hundreds of articles. My mission was always to broaden the player's understanding of their instrument, its care and function, its place in history, the people who work in "the trade," and especially the violin market, which can be a bewildering place for world-class financial titans, let alone musicians. Those years gave me a unique bird's-eye view of the violin business, which I am happy to share with you.
