Description

I renewed my longtime love for woodworking in mid-2009, & have been handcrafting beautiful items out of wood since mid-2010. I began with ogam (Irish divination tools); after a friend requested that I make a set of runes for her in early 2011, I decided to start making them regularly as well. In March 2011, I launched a new line of pendants, followed in November 2011 by earrings and bracelets, and with the receipt of a scroll saw for the holidays in 2011, you can bet there'll be more new items coming soon! If you have your own wood that you'd like to have made into a set of ogam or runes or jewelry.. or you see an item that you'd like, but want it just a little different, be it a set of ogam/runes from different wood, or a piece of jewelry with a different wood/charm/design, do please message me (https://www.facebook.com/messages/100000932540903) & ask. I'm always happy for the chance to work on custom orders!

General Info

I am truly honored to be given the opportunity to craft items that people will use for years to come; as such, every piece of wood that comes through my shop is treated with the utmost respect. My items are lovingly handcrafted from start to finish with as little power tool use as possible to preserve an artisan feel, and my woods are all obtained in a sustainable and/or green manner whenever possible, frequently from friends who collect fallen/trimmed wood for me. Check out the 'Wood' photo album for photos and a list of the woods I work with frequently and/or have on hand. Hours of careful cutting, shaping, sanding, woodburning, and finishing go into each of my carefully crafted wooden items; I hope that you'll be as pleased with the finished products as I am. ~ All of my ogam/rune sets are finished with a natural finish made from beeswax and olive oil. As a result, unlike chemical finishes, it may dry out a bit with time and use; when/if this happens, just contact me for more finish (silkwoodartisans [at] gmail), or for directions on how to make your own. Every piece of wooden jewelry is finished with that same beeswax/olive oil finish, in addition to a base layer of tung oil which offers a bit more water resistance. Your skin's natural oils will help keep the wood conditioned, and accidentally wearing it in the shower or the pool won't destroy it, but please be aware that my wooden jewelry was not designed to be immersed in water. ~ I love custom orders, and am happy to take commissions! I really enjoy making unique items out of special wood, or finding just the right wood for your item. Each custom order requires a 50% deposit at the time the order is placed, with the remainder of the price plus any shipping charges being due upon completion of the order. Failure to pick up/pay for your item or make approved payment arrangements with me within 6 weeks of your order's completion will result in the forfeit of your deposit and the sale of item to someone else in order to recover my costs. Please leave a message here or e-mail me (silkwoodartisans [at] gmail) if you'd like to discuss a commission. :)

Taking a break from burning some ooo pretty yew runes for some dinner.. then back to it. Once they're in finish, that'll be the last of the pre-Pagan Pride shopwork to accomplish (I can bring them along and pull them out of finish when I get there if I have to; from here they aren't on the 'must be complete before I leave at 5a on Sat' list, I just can't forget to bring them along lol). Then back to the workroom.. tonight and tomorrow are gonna be sheer shirtmaking carnage, I tell ya. \m/

Two and a half work days (give or take) left. Tick tick tick! :D Part of me is tempted to cancel my hotel reservation & sleep in my booth at the Pagan Pride venue this weekend just to get some semblance of a camping fix.. I'm having camping DTs since we had no ADF camping fest out west this year. Except for the fact that the forecast is for the 90's all weekend, and temps in the 90's + caitlin (who already has her own menopausal heat source these days, thanks) baking in the sun for 12 hours at a time + no shower for 2 days = um, no. *wrinkles nose* ;) Plus, my hotel has a hot tub, which will be lovely for evening soaks of the achy Arthritic Bits Crew after a day of vending. :) Back to it.. enjoy the day, friends! :D

Doing inventory and packing up stock (partly because it needs to be done, and partly because it's in the way of my workspace.. the workshop is a wreck lol). Each year I get a little better at packing things for ease of access/transportation and keeping track, but the actual inventory data entry part (or in my case, pencil and ledger paper) never fails to be tedious as snot. Lol At least the majority of the woodcrafts are packed up; now I'm creating item numbers for/labeling two dozen pendants.. one at a time.. whee! ;) Enjoy the day, and thanks for being part of Silkwood. :)

I got a commission last year from a friend to create a pendant from her late and beloved horse's tooth. I've been anxious to work on it but it hasn't been time yet, and yesterday I discovered why.. after tonight, it will have soaked up the rays of all three 2014 Supermoons. :D

I still think that bubinga sounds vaguely naughty. *snicker* It's sure pretty wood, though. :)

Black walnut ogam set, ash ogam set sans forfeda, and redwood rune set, all ready to be marked and burned at whatever stupidly early hour I wake up in the morning.. but for now, it's time for jammies for this achy bod. G'night, FB folks. :)

We'll be having a Raunchy Old Druids reunion of sorts in the Silkwood Artisans booth at Sacramento Pagan Pride this year.. at least in spirit, anyway. Silkwood's booth will feature select items from both Lori (omg homemade soaps FTW; the booth will be smellin' good!) and Brighde (this may be your only chance to snag one of her amazing stoles, in person!).. love my talented Raunchy sistahs. <3

The 'print a shirt for your group for omg-so-cheap' commercials concerned me for about a heartbeat.. then I remembered that after five years of regular washing, their designs will be cracked, faded, or just hosed.. and mine will look as good as the day I made them. Heat press vinyl designs can actually outlast the shirt, with proper care. :)

Just spent all day doing inventory & updating labels and other tedious work before tomorrow's last fundraiser of our Grove's tenth anniversary year. Goodness gracious do I hurt (my arthritic bits haaaate it when my ADHD hyperfocus keeps me in one place for too long, & it's been about 7 hours), but at least I feel accomplished. :) I was hoping to make a bit of sawdust this afternoon, but I'm gonna go soak my achy skeleton in the shower for a bit instead. *lilwhimper* Hope you're having a great day!!

Burning the oracle set took forever (as is to be expected with a very first attempt at any design), but I'm very happy with how they turned out. Now they're tucked into finish for the night, & will be ready to begin their journey home to Emerald by tomorrow afternoon. :D

Working on some pretty special Brighid-dedicated candleholders for Imbolc, & wishing I felt well enough to hit the woodshop; Em's oracle set is calling me! Happy New Year, friends, and thank you for being here!!
